First Degree complete Reiki Treatment
How to Perform the Complete First Degree Reiki Treatment
«Through the experience of harmonization, which brings us joy, serenity, and the awareness of a new way of feeling, Reiki flows freely within us. There is a clear sensation of having access to an unlimited amount of energy, and of being able to give it freely to anyone in need; and this is accompanied by the certainty that the more energy we give, the more it flows through us, recharging and harmonizing us. The energy we channel—of which we are humble conduits—is often described as "intelligent" because it flows according to the needs of the recipient and acts precisely where it is needed.»

COMPLETE FIRST DEGREE REIKI TREATMENT
The Context
«In Reiki treatments for others, the context is the first thing to keep in mind. If you find yourself in an emergency situation, any place becomes suitable for the treatment, and you use the time you have, whether it’s short or long.
For non-emergency treatments, it is useful to have a suitable room (tidy, free from disturbing noises, with soft lighting, offering comfort for both the recipient and the practitioner). Having a comfortable treatment table is ideal, but even an extendable table or a wooden board supported by three trestles can be effective alternatives.
Be sure to have a blanket or throw nearby in case it is needed. Often, those receiving treatment experience a drop in body temperature due to relaxation, while the practitioner tends to feel warmer as they are engaged in channeling vital energy.
Recipient's Clothing
The person receiving treatment does not need to undress due to the deep penetrating ability of Reiki energy. However, it’s best if the clothing is made of natural fibers (cotton, wool, linen, silk) as much as possible.
Both the practitioner and the recipient should remove their shoes, watches, glasses, rings, and bracelets. Additionally, before beginning the treatment, the practitioner should wash their hands. If you are a smoker, it is better to wash them multiple times.
Atmosphere
Soft music and good incense can help energetically purify the environment and create an atmosphere of relaxation and harmony. The room in which you work should also be clean and tidy.
Grounding
As an energy practitioner, you know that when treating other people, you run the risk of absorbing any disharmonies they may have. As a careful and conscientious Reiki practitioner, you can make yourself immune to this danger. To prevent any unwanted absorption, perform each treatment without any insulating materials (like rubber) under your feet. You can work barefoot, or with socks, or with cotton slippers, or anything else that allows you to maintain a good "grounding" and therefore discharge any disharmonious influence through the Reiki channels in your feet.
Even during the initiation to Reiki levels, great importance is given to the feet, precisely to achieve good grounding.
Invocation of Protection
As additional prevention, when the recipient is lying down with their eyes closed, before beginning the treatment, mentally ask the universe for protection in a way similar to the following: "I ask the universe to protect and shield me during this treatment against any disharmonious or negative influence!" While doing this, keep your non-dominant hand extended upward (like an antenna) with the palm facing up, and place your dominant hand over your heart.
Duration
Apart from emergencies, when a treatment is scheduled, it should ideally last about an hour. A series of 4-5 treatments naturally leads to more evident, profound, and lasting beneficial effects. Depending on the severity of the case, from serious illnesses to the simple need for relaxation and stress relief, you can propose the frequency of sessions accordingly.
Procedure
Now, for a few moments (e.g., for three breaths), center yourself at the heart and then begin the treatment according to your intuition. Place your hands gently and remain attentive to the perceptions under your palms. Keep them in the same position until you feel the need to move them, naturally one at a time, to avoid interrupting the energetic contact and, consequently, disrupting the relaxation of the person receiving the energy.
You have an entire body at your disposal, where you can position yourself on chakras, organs, joints, muscles, teeth, etc., according to your fluid intuition of the moment. The recipient’s genital organs should never be treated by direct contact but rather at the etheric level, holding your hand about 5-10 cm away while the other hand is in contact with another part of the recipient’s body.
As a First Degree Reiki practitioner, you are "in the hands of hands" (and not of the mind!) and are encouraged to use both hands in contact with the recipient to create an energy circuit. Continue the treatment for about an hour.
Sensations - The Reiki Practitioner’s Perception
Usually, the practitioner feels warm, while the person receiving, as they relax, may feel colder. However, when you treat, your hands do not always become "warm": whatever your perception, you are still transmitting Energy. The emanation of balanced and balancing Reiki energy (a non-polar energy) allows you to increase your sensitivity to the energy of others and be guided by this sensitivity during the treatment. By emitting harmonious energy during a treatment, when you encounter disharmony, you may perceive a kind of "friction" between the forces at play. This friction is what you experience in your hands as a particular and annoying sensation, such as tingling, pricking, burning, mild or intense pain, itching, and so on.
You may also feel localized pain sensations in your body that correspond precisely to the symptoms in the recipient’s body. This state should not last more than a few minutes because if it does, it’s a sign that you are not adequately discharging their disharmonies; if this happens, it may sometimes be appropriate to momentarily interrupt the treatment and rinse your hands under running water for about a minute.
Usui often advised holding your hands where disharmonies are perceived until the sensation shifts towards greater balance. You may also sense the recipient's emotions or feelings; these cases of empathy are entirely normal for those working with energy through the heart.
Smoothing the Etheric Field Around the Recipient
At the end of each treatment, perform a smoothing of the recipient’s etheric body three times by slowly moving your hands parallel, from head to toe, at a distance of 4-6 cm from their body. Retract your hands laterally after each pass to avoid smoothing in the opposite direction. Then, rub your hands together to break the energetic connection and wash them under running water.

Attitude of Presence for the Reiki Practitioner
While performing the Reiki treatment, even though you are not doing anything specific (since it is the energy that does the work, and you are merely a channel), it is advisable to maintain a state of respectful and loving presence. And, of course, attentive listening. It is normal to get distracted occasionally; when you notice it, immediately return to a state of presence, as it is precisely in that state that the energy flows with great power. In presence, you adopt an attitude of authentic and loving availability.
Suggestions on Possible Hand Positions
The positions shown on the following pages are just a few of the many possibilities. We are constantly invited to feel and experiment through our creativity which positions are most suitable for each specific situation. In recent years, before the discovery of the true history of Mikao Usui, Reiki was often practiced in a "dogmatic" way, with precise rules and equally rigid fixed patterns.
For example, the so-called "complete" Reiki treatment was structured in a sequence of 21 fixed positions, each held for three minutes. Many relaxation music tracks, capable of marking the rhythm of a Reiki treatment with the sound of Tibetan cymbals every three minutes, have proliferated based on this strange and very Western rule… perhaps to allow the Reiki practitioner to avoid listening to their rhythm and sensations, free to behave like a perfect automaton. As much as I try, I really can’t imagine the good Mikao Usui in such a rigid context.
Whatever position your hands are in—not following the "head" but the instinct of "feeling"—the task ahead, in addition to being present to yourself and the situation, is to be in loving and quiet listening to what is happening on an energetic level.»
