Heart Balance in Reiki
The importance of Heart Centering in the Reiki Method
«Presence, being-in-the-world (for the primitives) or identity (for the contemporaries) represent enormous, indispensable values. Consequently, the crisis of presence or the crisis of identity represents the dark side of the coin: the panic fear. It is logical to think that every being clings with all their strength to a certain, stable, and lasting identity and that, to do this, they need to maintain in an equally certain, stable, and lasting balance the various and multifaceted parts that make them up. After all, everyone has spent a lifetime becoming who they are, starting from a thousand reference models of identification, until becoming unique, original, and distinctive, even if out of their center. An equilibrium, even if not authentic or the result of a thousand defenses and compromises, is still fundamental to the survival of a person. Only with a certain degree of balance can one face the countless demands of daily reality, which require them to remain firmly identical despite the continuous change of contents.»

THE MEANING OF HEART BALANCING IN REIKI
In Reiki, every treatment is always preceded by a brief yet significant gesture: heart centering. For a few seconds, simply place your hands on your heart (with fingers together, the thumb resting on the hand, and the fold of the hand adjusting to the surface it touches to maximize contact and the perception of related sensations).
Every time we perform heart balancing, we give ourselves this important message: "The Heart is my starting point, the Heart is my means, the Heart is my final goal!" In a rather rigid approach to teaching Reiki, heart balancing or centering was conceived as a sort of "opening the energy tap" or "turning on the energy switch." Since Reiki flows through us continuously, these statements seem, in fact, meaningless.
Heart centering, however, is a true catalyst for our attention to the energy: it helps us be present to the energy.
HEART BALANCING - GASSHO
The sacredness of the gesture lies in focusing the Reiki practitioner's presence on their most precious point: the unity of light, the divine spark residing in the heart, in the 4th chakra.
Beginning every Reiki treatment with a few seconds on the heart (a good measure might be three breaths) means bringing the sacred seal of the heart to where the hands will go.
Mikao Usui practiced the Gassho position (Reiji Ho) as Heart Balancing. Each time you perform Heart Balancing, your consciousness receives this message: "The Heart is my starting point, the Heart is my means, the Heart is my final goal!"»
