Incorrect Reiki Symbols: Why Do Many Teachers Use an Incorrect Version of Dai Ko Myo?
Incorrect Graphic Versions
THE SECRECY OF WESTERN SPREADING AS THE CAUSE OF VARIOUS GRAPHICAL VARIANTS
Here are the four traditional symbols of Mikao Usui’s Traditional Reiki. The most controversial of them (and this is a paradox, considering it’s the only one made up of three simple Kanji) is the Master Symbol DAI KO MYO.
The version shown below on the right is the one used by the USUI REIKI RYOHO GAKKAI (the original Reiki organization, of which Usui was the first president) and certified by them as the original and correct version.

There are many different versions of this original symbol circulating, with the two most common being the following:
INCORRECT VERSIONS
These variations, though imprecise forms of the correct symbol, cannot be considered entirely wrong, as they somewhat resemble the original and represent deviations from it.
Teachers using these symbols can switch to the original at any time since the deviations are not too extreme. This can be done by simply starting to use the correct symbol in their Reiki practice. In any case, I advise those in this situation to ask another Reiki Master for attunement to the original symbol.
A different matter altogether concerns the MYSTERIOUS MULTITUDE of Reiki teachers who DO NOT USE USUI'S MASTER SYMBOL to transmit Usui's Reiki! These teachers use the so-called Tibetan Master Symbol, or Tibetan Dai Ko Mio (spelled with an “i” instead of a “y”), or Dumo.

This symbol is indeed beautiful and powerful—it is effectively used in the tradition of the Advanced Karuna® Reiki Method — BUT IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MIKAO USUI'S TRADITIONAL REIKI!
Certainly, Reiki Masters who use this symbol do so in good faith, as it was passed down to them by other teachers. They probably don’t realize that Dumo does not belong to Usui's Reiki method. However, I strongly advise these teachers to get attuned to Mikao Usui's correct Dai Ko Myo symbol, out of respect for the Reiki tradition and their students.
